The Piano Cover Project

Overview: For my project I chose to learn how to play Take Me To Church by Hozier on the piano and bass. I chose to play this song on piano because I like the song and I thought that it would a be great song to learn on the piano. This song expresses a variety of moods and emotions including drama, love, anger and sarcasm. During this project I focused on expressing the mood and emotion of the song, creating an interesting cover, and creating a well performed cover. First I recorded the piano parts and then added drums, bass, and strings on top of the piano part to add more layers and create interest.

The Songwriting Project

For our second project we chose to make a whole album production, including a photo shoot and an original song. We wanted to do this project because I wrote an original song and I wanted to release it on a full album. Also, Devon wants to become a professional music engineer and so recording an album would be great experience. To make a full album we recorded four new songs including one original and added these recordings with the best songs i recorded last year. I am becoming a professional music artist. Throughout the project, we focused on the big musical ideas of expression, innovation, and craftsmanship. The first song we chose to record was “Time of your life.” This song expresses a time in someones life when everything doesn’t seem to be working out, but knowing that they will get through it. I created an innovative cover of this song by having a different guitar pattern and signing it a bit differently than Billie Jo Armstrong. I focused on craftsmanship by making sure I stayed on key with voice, making sure my guitar was in tune, and making sure i stayed in key with my voice and guitar. The second song was called “Fireproof”, by One Direction. This song expresses a love that is undying and will never be broken by any outside forces. This was the first ever acoustic version of the song so it was much different from the original song that One Direction recorded. I had to come up with my own strumming patterns for the song and i had to make sure it fit with the melody and tempo of the song. This in itself made it innovated and showed good craftsmanship.  The last song we did was called “Collide” by Howie Day. I decided i wanted to do the acoustic version of this song, because i knew i could do more with making it innovative and fit it better with my voice. This song is again a love song, like Fireproof, but this is more about two people coming together. The last song we did was an original that i wrote with a close friend of mine. My friend gave me a poem which she thought could easily be turned into a song. I had some struggles at first but in the end i wrote a song that i am extremely proud of and I can’t wait to show everyone the work that i put into it.

During phase one, we chose which songs she would like to learn and record for the album as I experimented with garageband and logic.

During the second phase, we did a photoshoot for the album and began recording the songs in the studio.

During the third phase of the project, we did some re-recording and editing and finally put the album songs into iTunes.

The Music Video Project

For our project we chose to create a music video to the song Classic by MKTO. During this project we learned a variety of knowledge and skills including singing skills, how to play the bass guitar, keyboard, and midi instruments. We learned how to record and edit music using GarageBand. We also learned how to create, record, and edit a music video using iMovie. We focused on the big ideas of expression and how to create an interesting music video. We expressed the mood of happiness and joy through a lot of laughter and things that show us having fun and being happy. We all hope you enjoy our video.

Game of Thrones Cover Project

For my project, I choose to create a piano cover of the Game of Thrones theme song.I chose to learn this song because I love the show and the song so I really want to be able to play it. During the project, I focused on the big ideas of craftsmanship, innovation, and expression. The Game of Thrones Theme Song is dramatic, exciting, serious and powerful so I tried to make my cover express those emotions. I created a well-crafted cover by using many instruments, making sure everything is balanced, and playing everything to the best of my ability. I created an innovative version of this piece by using piano as the main instrument instead of violin and cell. Also, I changed the structure of the song. I hope you enjoy my cover!

Nessie Renee's Music Video Project

Last semester I made an album of covers and one original. This semester I decided to take my original song and make a music video for it. I’ve made music video’s before so I had a little bit of a background in this area. But for this video, I wanted something professional, something I could be proud of, something my family could be proud of. For the first phase I took some time to analyze some other video’s to help me figure out what makes a good music video. A god music videos needs to be expressive, innovative, and well-crafted. My video expresses a feeling of sadness, and a time of pain from losing someone important to you.  My music video is well-crafted because I spent time making the video clips short enough to keep the video interesting, and I made a storyboard to help get all of my ideas for it, which also helped in filming.  My music video is innovative because the song used to make it was written by me and one of my friends, it isn’t a cover and it isn’t a remake of someone else’s video. I came to the conclusion that a good video needs to have 1) A story that is easy to follow 2) Clips that change quickly to keep it interesting and 3) Clips that follow the story of the song.  After all of  that I started Filming. The second phase I finished filming all of the shots I needed. For the third and final phase, I finished editing, and put the video on youtube. Making this video was a bit more difficult than I had expected. Mainly because I did most of the filming on my own. But in the end I made something that I’m extremely proud of. I hope you like it.

Zack's Logic Project

For my project, I chose to learn how to make a track using Logic Pro X, a program installed on our computers in order to produce music. I chose to do this because in previous projects, I have worked in a group so this time I have decided to work solo and express my ideas into music using Logic. Since I have never used Logic, I am going to learn first: how to use it, and second: all the fundamentals and tips of using the program to make my project the best it can be. During this project I will be focusing on the ideas of expression, craftsmanship, and innovation. My piece expresses an upbeat, energetic, and relaxing mood. I created a well crafted piece by using patterns and making sure it’s interesting throughout the whole song. I also made this an innovative piece by creating my own beats and melody.

Peaceful Logic Project

I choose to make another single from scratch using logic pro, but this time I chose to incorporate a variety of vocal samples. During this project, I refined my production skills while learning how to use new plugins and add ons in the program. Throughout the project, I focused on the big ideas of expression, craftsmanship, and innovation. My piece is mysterious, relaxing and peaceful. I created a well-crafted and innovative piece by adding extra tracks for effects, combining sounds that work together, and choosing better instruments all around.

Downton Abbey Project

For my project, I chose to learn how to play the Downton Abbey theme song on piano and record a version of the piece using logic. I wanted to learn this song because I began learning it a few years ago and wanted to learn it again. Throughout the project, I focused on the big ideas of expression, craftsmanship, and innovation. This piece is very dramatic, theatrical, and powerful. I created a well-crafted and innovative piece by adding layers of different instruments along with the piano part, making sure all parts line up at the end and making sure volumes are situated.
